27 December 2015. It is interesting to see several Adelaide home building companies now offering solar panels as part of their offering. Adelaide and South Australia have embraced solar installation (as a percentage of dwellings with solar power installed) more than any other capital city and State in Australia. As the cost of solar battery storage systems drops we expect to see fully integrated solar / battery systems being offered as a ‘standard’ inclusion in new homes in Adelaide over the next few years. This option makes the possibility of using solar energy stored during the daytime and used at night time a reality and this will certainly represent the next stage of ‘evolution’ in residential solar power usage in South Australia.

In past years some level of criticism was leveled at solar power systems in terms of claims that the 'energy inputs' into manufacturing solar panels and the corresponding carbon emissions was quite significant compared to the 'carbon reduction' that was, supposedly the major environmental benefit of installing solar. The I.E.C. reported in late 2013 that a survey of 20 leading solar panel manufacturers showed that, on average, solar panels now become 'carbon negative' (that is, effectively start reducing CO2 emissions - by 'replacing electricity that would otherwise be drawn from the electricity grid) after 24 months. Most solar panel manufacturers rate their panels for 25 year operation (usually at around 80 percent of their rated power output). Based on this information, solar panels systems are definitely useful in contributing to CO2 reduction over the life of the system.
